The House Terms

Terms of sale, and a warranty for life.

A piano is bought once and kept for a lifetime, and the relationship between a house and its client should be just as durable. We set our terms out in full, and in plain language, so that nothing is left to memory: what is promised, what is expected, and what is protected.

01

Quotations & prices

  • All prices are quoted in United States Dollars.
  • A quotation is valid for seven (7) days from the date it is issued. After that period the price may change, and an instrument quoted but not reserved remains available to any other client.
  • Unless stated otherwise in writing, a quoted price includes preparation, tuning and regulation in our atelier, delivery within Lebanon, the settling tuning after delivery, and enrolment in the Piano Registry with certificate.
  • A bench, cover, humidity control equipment, stool or any other accessory is included only where that item is named in writing.
  • Only written quotations are binding. No price, discount, inclusion or promise given verbally, by any member of our team, forms part of a sale unless it is written into the purchase agreement.

02

Viewing the instruments

Clients are welcome in the showroom to see and play any instrument, with our full attention and with no obligation to buy. We encourage clients to take their time, and to bring whoever they wish: a teacher, a pianist, a member of the family.

  • Beyond two viewings of the same instrument, a deposit is required before a further appointment is arranged. An instrument held on the floor for repeated appointments is an instrument withheld from other clients.
  • Independent inspection by a technician of the client's choosing is welcome, at the client's cost and by appointment, before purchase. We prefer an informed buyer.
  • Viewing an instrument, agreeing a price verbally, or stating an intention to purchase does not reserve it. Only a deposit does.

03

Deposit & reservation

  • An instrument is reserved upon payment of a deposit of 30% of the agreed purchase price, together with a signed purchase agreement.
  • On receipt of the deposit the instrument is withdrawn from the floor, declined to other clients, and prepared for the agreed delivery date.
  • The deposit is non-refundable. It is the consideration for taking the instrument off the market and for the preparation carried out on it. It is not a holding fee, and it is not returned if the client changes their mind.
  • If the client postpones the agreed delivery date, the reservation is held for a further fourteen (14) days at no charge. Beyond that period we may apply a storage charge or, after written notice, release the instrument and retain the deposit.
  • If the client becomes unreachable for thirty (30) days, the reservation lapses, the deposit is forfeited, and the instrument returns to the floor.

No deposit, no reservation.

04

Payment

  • The balance is payable in full at the moment of delivery, before the instrument is unloaded and placed. Delivery and payment are a single act.
  • We do not deliver against a promise of later payment, a post-dated cheque, or a part payment. No exception can be authorised by our team on the day.
  • Payment is accepted in United States Dollars, in cash or by transfer agreed in advance. Any bank, transfer or exchange charge is borne by the client.
  • Instalments or a staged payment plan exist only where they are written into the purchase agreement and signed before delivery.
  • Ownership of the instrument passes to the client only upon receipt of payment in full. Until then the instrument remains the property of Basbous & Sons wherever it is located.

05

Delivery & access

  • Delivery is carried out by Basbous & Sons, or by movers appointed by us, within Lebanon. Delivery outside Lebanon is quoted separately.
  • The client is responsible for access: stairs, lifts, doorways, balconies, gates and parking, and for informing us in advance of any difficulty. Where specialised equipment, a crane or additional men are required, the cost is quoted and charged separately.
  • If our team arrives and delivery cannot be completed because access is inadequate, nobody is present, or the balance is not settled, the cost of that journey and of a second attempt is charged to the client.
  • Delivery dates are given in good faith and may be affected by weather, road conditions or circumstances beyond our control. We are not liable for consequential loss arising from a delay.
  • The client, or a person appointed by the client, must be present at delivery to inspect the instrument and sign the delivery note. A signed delivery note confirms the instrument arrived in the condition in which it was sold.
  • Relocation by anyone other than Basbous & Sons is at the client's own risk, and voids the warranty in respect of any resulting damage. A piano is heavier and more fragile than it appears, and most damage we see was caused in transit by others.
  • A complimentary settling tuning is included, carried out four to eight weeks after delivery, once the instrument has adapted to its new environment.

06

Final sale

Each instrument is individual, prepared by hand, and sold only after the client has personally seen it, played it and accepted it.

  • All sales are final.
  • No return, exchange or refund is granted for change of mind, a change of circumstances, the opinion of a third party, the room's acoustics or size, a disagreement within the family, or an offer subsequently found elsewhere.
  • An instrument is sold as seen and as played in our showroom. Cosmetic marks, natural variation in wood, and the character of an older instrument are part of what the client accepted, and are not defects.

07

Refunds & claims

Where a claim is admitted

We stand behind everything we sell. A remedy is granted where:

  • the instrument sustained severe damage caused by Basbous & Sons during delivery; or
  • a material defect was present at the time of sale and was not disclosed to the client.
  • Any such claim must be raised in writing within seven (7) days of delivery, and verified by our inspection at the client's premises before the instrument is moved or worked on. Our remedy is, at our option, repair, replacement with an instrument of equivalent value, or refund. Repair by our atelier is our first remedy in almost every case, and is normally the better outcome for the instrument.

Refunds outside those grounds

A refund is never granted as of right in any other circumstance. Where, as a goodwill gesture and entirely at our discretion, we agree in writing to take an instrument back, the client is refunded the purchase price less:

  • the deposit, which remains forfeited in all cases;
  • the full cost of transport in both directions, including labour and any equipment used;
  • the cost of retuning, regulation and any restoration of condition required before the instrument can return to the floor;
  • a charge reflecting the period the instrument was withdrawn from sale, and the loss of value of an instrument that has left the showroom.
  • These deductions are stated to the client in writing before any return is agreed, and the balance is settled once the instrument has been returned and inspected. Goodwill in one case does not create an entitlement in another.

08

Lifetime warranty

Basbous & Sons warrants for life the structural integrity and workmanship of every instrument we supply: the frame, soundboard, bridges, pinblock, action assembly and case construction, together with all work carried out in our atelier. It is offered because we service what we sell.

Conditions of validity

  • The instrument is tuned and serviced at least once every twelve (12) months, and more often where its use or environment requires it.
  • All tuning, regulation and repair is carried out exclusively by a Basbous & Sons certified technician.
  • Every visit is logged against the instrument's registry number in the Piano Registry. The service log is the sole record by which a claim is assessed.
  • The instrument remains at the address recorded in the Registry, unless relocation is carried out by us or notified to us in writing in advance.

Automatic voiding of the warranty

The warranty is void immediately, automatically and permanently, without notice and without exception, in either of the following cases:

  • Work by anyone outside our certified team. If the instrument is tuned, regulated, repaired, adjusted, internally cleaned or opened by a technician not certified by Basbous & Sons, the warranty ends at that moment, whether or not that work caused the fault, and whether or not it was competently carried out. We cannot warrant an instrument whose interior has been in another pair of hands, because we can no longer know what was done to it.
  • Neglect of annual servicing. If more than twelve (12) months pass without a service visit logged against the instrument's registry number, the warranty ends on the date that service fell due. An instrument left untuned is an instrument not cared for, and any failure that follows is a consequence of that neglect rather than of our workmanship.
  • A warranty voided under this clause cannot be reinstated: not by resuming service, not by paying arrears, and not by later inspection. Repairs can of course still be carried out by our atelier at our normal rates, and we will always look after the instrument.

What the warranty does not cover

  • Environmental damage: humidity, dryness, heat, direct sunlight, water, damp walls or floors, and placement near radiators, air conditioning units, windows or exterior walls. Environment is the most common cause of harm to a piano, and it is within the owner's control.
  • Misuse or abuse: impact, excessively forceful playing, objects or liquids placed on or in the instrument, and damage caused by children, guests, pets or third parties.
  • Normal wear: strings, hammers, felts, bushings, dampers, key surfaces, pedals and casework finish, and the natural drift of tuning between services.
  • Accidents and external events: fire, flood, electrical faults, theft, building works, transport by others, and force majeure.
  • Consequential loss. Our liability is limited in every case to the repair, replacement or refund of the instrument itself, and never exceeds the purchase price paid.

Transfer of warranty

  • The warranty attaches to the instrument, not to the owner. It passes to a subsequent owner provided the ownership transfer is recorded in the Piano Registry and the annual service record is unbroken, a rare protection that preserves the value of an instrument bought from this house.

09

Servicing & the Registry

Every instrument we supply carries a registry number in the format BNS-YYYY-NNNN and a certificate issued in its name. The Registry holds the instrument's identity together with its complete service and ownership history, and owners may consult their instrument's record through the private link provided with the certificate.

  • Arranging annual service is the client's responsibility. As a courtesy we contact registered owners when a service falls due; the absence of such a reminder does not extend or excuse the warranty conditions.
  • Service visits are charged at our current rates unless included in a written service agreement.
  • Additional tuning may be required in the first year, and after any relocation or significant change in the room's climate.

10

General

  • These terms are accepted by the client upon signature of the purchase agreement and payment of a deposit, and form part of every sale.
  • The signed purchase agreement together with these terms constitutes the entire agreement between the client and Basbous & Sons, and replaces any prior discussion, message or verbal understanding.
  • No variation to these terms is valid unless agreed in writing and signed by Basbous & Sons.
  • If any provision is found unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue in full force.
  • Client details are held solely for the purpose of the sale, delivery, servicing and Registry records, and are never published or shared. Public registry pages display instrument information only, never owner information.
  • We may photograph or film instruments in our showroom and atelier for our own records and publication. Clients, homes and private details are never filmed or published without permission.
  • We ask that any concern be raised with us directly and in writing first; it is almost always resolved at once. These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Lebanon, and the courts of Lebanon have jurisdiction.

Questions

Ask us anything before you decide.

Every term above exists so that a purchase is clear from the first day to the thirtieth year. If anything here needs explaining, ask, and we will walk you through it in person.
